Professor Reid is truly a man for all seasons. His early enthusiasm, intense training and athletic abilities allowed him to succeed in many sports particularly track and field, soccer and weight-lifting, up to and including national level competition. This abiding interest led him to select a career, which combined exercise, sport, rehabilitation, medicine and surgery.

Professor Reid graduated from the Prince of Wales Hospital - London, England in 1963, with a Diploma in Physiotherapy. Subsequently he obtained a Teacher's Diploma in Physiotherapy from the University of Toronto where he graduated with honours. He studied at the University of Alberta, gaining both a Baccalaureate Degree and a Doctor of Medicine with Distinction. Dr. Reid obtained a fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1979, as well as a Specialist Certificate in Orthopaedic Surgery, and was awarded the Lord Nuffield Scholarship in Orthopaedics to attend Oxford University. In 1980, a Master of Surgery Degree was obtained from the University of Liverpool. He has successfully sat the competency examination in sports medicine of the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine.  As an officer in the armed forces, Dr. Reid was awarded his regiment's Subultan's Sword and the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal.

Currently Dr. Reid is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, an Adjunct Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, and an Honorary Professor of Physical Education. He has served as consultant in sports medicine for intervarsity teams at the University of Alberta and surgeon to several professional organizations: the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club, the Edmonton Eskimo's Football Club, and the Alberta Ballet Company.  He has traveled with several national sports teams and was the Chief Medical Officer for the 1995 Universiade Games.

Dr. Reid's scholarly activities include the publication of over 100 scientific papers, numerous chapters in medical textbooks and several single-authored texts, including a definitive volume on sports medicine. Professor Reid has served as a visiting professor, and is in demand as a teacher in many countries including Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.  His research areas include functional outcomes of anterior cruciate surgery, surgical techniques for management of posterior cruciate ligament injury, rehabilitation of shoulder problems and the effect of modalities on the healing response of tissues.

Dr. Reid's clinical practice revolves around a special interest in knee surgery and rehabilitation but his most significant contributions and energy are directed towards teaching, particularly in the clinical setting.

Currently, with his wife and nurse, Kaye, and their five children, a new interest is emerging in thoroughbred horses. The possibility of applying established principles of exercise physiology and injury rehabilitation to the racehorse provides a challenge for the future.
