> About the Clinic
The University of Alberta Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic is a multi-disciplinary facility housed in the Physical Education Complex on the University of Alberta Campus. Staffed by physicians and physical therapists who specialize in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of orthopedic and sports related injury, the Clinic was originally designed to serve the needs of both competitive and recreationally active individuals alike. The Clinic’s interdisciplinary approach to care, its functional approach to rehabilitation, and the emphasis placed on patient education and home programming lent to the success of our practice and the continued demand for service, not only in the area of sport medicine, but in the care of musculoskeletal injury arising from other causes.
Today, our physical therapy and medical services are in demand by individuals within the city of Edmonton, Northern, and Central Alberta. Our patients access our services through medical referral and “direct access”. Our physician referral base originates from across the entire City, and indeed, when examined closely, reaches throughout the province. Patient care encompasses management of acute and chronic orthopedic and musculoskeletal injury, rehabilitation of injury, and progressive, functional restoration to activities of daily living. The goal of all rehabilitation is to allow return to a healthy lifestyle. Assessment of a patient’s condition is done in a global manner, fostering identification of the cause of injury, thus minimizing the chance of reoccurrence. A close link is maintained within the Clinic’s medical community as well as that in the private sector providing continuity of care for the patients. We have, over the years, developed excellent working relationships with other allied health professionals, which contributes to the quality of care we are able to deliver to our patients.
Quite apart from the clinical aspect of our mandate is that of education. To this end, we continue to work with the three faculties with which we are aligned to deliver current and problem solving based educational experiences for the students and fellows who serve elective and placement time within our facility. Included in these rotations are orthopedic residents, physiatry residents, family practice residents, orthopedic fellows, sports medicine fellow, medical students, physical therapy students, and physical education students.
